I can now read. It’s only a kindergarten book. I can’t understand most of what it says, but I can pronounce the words. These past few weeks I have found myself revisiting childhood memories. I remember doing endless spelling drills with my mother every evening so I could get an “A” on the spelling test I had every Friday. I remember being in speech class in the 2nd grade and struggling to pronounce my own language. Now I listen to a recorder over and over and over and OVER again so I can stumble through a conversation with my neighbors in their native language. I have reverted back to the child that couldn’t speak well. That is very humbling. In the midst of remembering my childhood I remember the words of our Master “unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven.” (Matthew 18.3)
